So… You’re Moving In With a Partner!

How to live with a tall person as an average height person:

Measure!

I specifically measured the shower head and the doorframes, but go crazy. This is just something that may bring them some comfort, but it doesn’t have to fully dictate your choices if your partner is comfortable with it.

Get as big of a bed as possible…

I bought myself a “luxurious” full-sized bed when I moved out for the first time. I thought it would be enough for at least the 7 years you’re supposedly supposed to keep a mattress. I was wrong. The second my partner moved in, my bed space was cut by at least 80%. Move forward with a twin or full with caution…

They will most likely eat way more than you.

The amount of snacks we go through is unbelievable. Our grocery bill… unbelievable! And the worst part is: you want them to be fed so you sacrifice your leftovers and possibly even a portion of your meal with ease.

How to live with a maximalist person as a minimalist person:

Have a plan.

Out of the large ticket items, what do you want to go where? What are the smaller, but more personally valuable items going? From there, you can decide how much more space you can both agree should be taken up by objects.

Set a goal.

What is a desired aesthetic or outcome that you both like? How do you want your dream shared space to feel?

Agree.

Get to a place where you are both happy. I got to keep my perfect blue velvet couch even though my partner is more minimal in color scheme and he has grown fond of it finally! He, however, got to pick out our dresser. It’s all about balance.
